WORK BEGINS ON ASSISTED LIVING BUILDING - 38 APARTMENTS PLANNED

Work is underway on The Gardens at Jefferson, a 38-apartment assisted living building scheduled for completion next spring. Contractors started moving dirt several weeks ago, and installation of forms and footings is now underway. Reservations for rentals are now being taken.

The building, located west of Grimmell Road between Ever Greene Ridge and the Adams Court Apartments, will offer studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. All are private units.

The Gardens at Jefferson is a retirement community that will offer assistance to residents for daily living procedures. Staff will be available around the clock to provide residents with comfort and leisure, across a full range of needs. Residents will wear a pendant-type personal emergency call system.

The retirement community will feature an abundance of activities, including social events and outings, that are resident-driven: the residents themselves will decide how they want to spend their day.

The Gardens at Jefferson will offer three meals a day, served restaurant style in the dining room; housekeeping and laundry service; a beauty and barber shop on site; a community kitchen for people who want to cook; and a variety of family rooms, lounges, a recreation room, a fitness room, and a chapel. The emphasis is on attractive and comfortable living.

A special feature of the retirement community is the gardens in the central courtyard, including flower beds, herb gardens and vegetables. There will be areas where residents may plant their own garden items.

A full-time registered nurse will be on call 24 hours a day. Among the staff positions are the building director and a full-time activities coordinator.

Marketing director Kathy Savits will host an infomational meeting, probably in September, to brief interested people on details, floor plans, amerities and services. Rent will be month to month, with no lease and no paid buy-in. Interested persons are invited to call Savits at (515) 386-2555.

The Gardens at Jefferson is owned by Vintage Living of Cedar Rapids, with Senior Housing Consultants, also of Ceder Rapids, as the development company. The retirement community is the first such location to be constructed by Vintage Living, which is considering building others around the Midwest as well. Senior Housing Consultants currently manages 14 other assisted living buildings in the Midwest.
