SCRANTON MANUFACTURING BOOSTS EMPLOYMENT

Scranton Manufacturing has opened a new division in Atlantic to support the production of New Way garbage collection vehicles at the Scranton facility. The plant in Atlantic is dedicated to producing welded assemblies that are transported to Scranton for final completion.

The facility in Atlantic currently employs seven welders in an 11,000 square foot leased area. Within one year the Atlantic facility will have in excess of 20 employees and transfer to a larger facility, a company spokesman said. Longer term plans include hiring up to 40 employees over the next three years.

Currently the 130,000 square foot facility in Scranton employs approximately 160 full-time employees between the first and second shifts. The company's sales volume has grown at an average of 20 percent per year over the last 10 years.

The management in Scranton believes that the company has the product demand to grow in excess of 50 percent over the next year. "The increased demand has been created through the employees of Scranton Manufacturing designing, building, marketing and providing customer support for a quality product. We are proud of these accomplishments but are now faced with the challenge of growing the company at an extremely rapid rate," stated a company press release.

Items being pursued to accomplish the needed growth include aggressive recruiting efforts, improved efficiencies through implementation of lean manufacturing principles, increased outsourcing, and setting up the remote manufacturing division in Atlantic.

Finding skilled welders in this area has become more challenging over the years. The Atlantic location can access the skilled welders in that area to allow the facility in Scranton to grow.

"We anticipate that for each welding position added at the Atlantic division, there will be one to two jobs created in the Scranton facility to support that production," the release stated.

Scranton Manufacturing has been working with the Greene County Development Corporation to expand recruiting efforts. "We are committed to the employees we have today and want to continue to bring quality people to the local community" the release stated.
